Three Middle Georgia State faculty members were recognized at Honors Convocation for achievement in service, scholarship or teaching.

Excellence in Service: Dr. Christopher Hornung, Assistant Professor of Engineering.

Hornung has a strong record of service to the institution and to the Middle Georgia community.  He has served Middle Georgia State as a member of the faculty senate and  as a longtime student club advisor.  For the past 15 years, he has organized the Science Olympiad and overseen 23 events in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. He runs workshops in the Bibb and Houston County school systems to help teachers assemble and prepare their teams for academic competition. He serves the Boy Scouts of America as counselor for the robotics merit badge.  He joined the faculty of Middle Georgia State in 1996.

Excellence in Scholarship:  Dr. Stephen Fuller, Associate Professor of English.

Fuller has produced scholarship celebrated on a national level for its quality and contribution to his  field.  While maintaining teaching and service duties he published his first book in 2012.  That book, "Eudora Welty and Surrealism," won the prestigious Eudora Welty Prize in 2013 after undergoing a rigorous peer review. Fuller joined the institution in 2007.

Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Charla Baker, Assistant Professor of Mathematics.

Baker is described by students as “motivating,” “awesome" and “a superstar.”  A colleague described her as arguably the most beloved math professor at the college. With her good-natured teaching style, she has helped numerous non-math majors to overcome their math anxiety and enabled them to perform to their highest capability. Students have even been known to drive between campuses to take Baker's classes.  She joined Middle Georgia State College in 2009.
