Department of History

Greetings, and welcome to the Department of History. On behalf of the faculty of the department, I am grateful for your interest in what we do.

Students majoring in history learn to analyze evidence and draw objective conclusions. While history is the study and interpretation of past events these disciplines also teach larger lessons. The research and analytical skills learned in history courses are applicable in nearly every field of professional endeavor.

The largest job market for history majors is in the field of education, but it is far from the only one. Many who major in history also find careers in journalism, management, electronic and print media, politics, government service, non-profit organizations, and lobbying, among other areas. Traditionally, history majors have also been employed in historical site interpretation, research, historic preservation, or archival and museum work. In addition to developing an understanding of history, a history degree builds and enhances required academic skills for successful completion of graduate study or law school, making the traditional history track a preferred pre-law major.

The Department of History offers bachelor’s degrees in History (B.A.), as well as baccalaureate minors in U.S. History and World History.

Students can also earn a History BA while gaining skills in exciting concentrations – Public History, Documentary Film Making, and Secondary Education – or in internships, where they gain valuable practical experience at museums, national historic sites, or other area organizations.

We invite all students to stop by the department office and learn more!

Yours sincerely,
Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D.
