JOB SUMMARY: This position assists in the maintenance of campus grounds and landscaping.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Groundskeeping Duties: 100%

  • Collects trash from parking lots, sidewalks, and other areas; empties trash cans.
  • Assists in the installation and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Mows grass and removes weeds.
  • Maintains grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Trims trees and hedges.
  • Installs and maintains flower beds and other landscaping features.
  • Operates a leaf blower.
  • Moves outdoor and patio furniture as needed.
  • Installs traffic and informational signs.
  • Fills potholes.
  • Paints sports fields.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the work.
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance principles.
  • Skill in the operation and repair of maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Adequate in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department and college policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of related grounds maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform grounds maintenance duties. Success in this position contributes to a safe, well maintained, and attractive campus environment.
  • The employee may be required to work after hours, weekends, and be on-call.
  • All employees must pass a background check, motor vehicle report, and may be required to submit for a credit check for issuance of a purchasing card. MGA is a drug-, alcohol-, and tobacco-free campus. 

CONTACTS:                                                      

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college employees, contractors, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services or to resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, frequently in hot, cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Currently holds a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia – Class C.

Preferred

  • Class A or B CDL.

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:

  • This position is non-exempt (biweekly paid).
  • Pay grade 8.
