JOB SUMMARY: This is a professional, full time, live-in position in the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Primary responsibility is for the provision of residence life programming that enhances the personal development of students, including a focus on personal responsibility, leadership skills, diversity awareness and civic responsibility with an emphasis on student learning outcomes.  This position is responsible for coordinating residence life operations for assigned residence hall and for enforcing residence life policies and procedures. 

MAJOR DUTIES: 

Responds to emergency or problem situations in an efficient and effective manner

  • Develops an on-call schedule for each staff member to ensure continuous supervision of residence life activities.
  • Maintains accurate key records.
  • Conducts student check-ins and check-outs at the beginning and end of each semester.
  • Identifies as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)
  • Maintains residence hall and student records.
  • Resolve minor discipline issues and completes related documentation.
  • Monitors maintenance log sheet.
  • Consolidate student room assignments and reports room changes.
  • Inspects residence hall daily to identify and resolve maintenance and student conduct issues. 

Advice and support

  • Supervise the work of RAs; conducts staff meetings; communicates with staff to exchange ideas, solve problems, and discuss ideas
  • Supervises social and educational programs.
  • Completes staff evaluations. 

Train Staff

  • Recruits, selects and trains Resident Assistants (RAs).
  • Educates residents of college rules and regulations and the consequences of infractions.
  • Complete educational sessions during RA Training for Fall and Spring 

Responds and maintains positive relationships with the community; collaborates with other departments in implementing a broad spectrum of initiatives

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: 

  • Knowledge of residence life policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
  • Skill in the operation of computer and job related software programs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director of Housing & Residence Life assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities. 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the academic calendar, course catalogs, the employee handbook, and the student handbook and code of conduct. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application. This position develops department guidelines. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK: 

  • The work consists of varied management and supervisory duties.
  • The purpose of this position is to direct residence life programming operations. Success in this position contributes to the delivery of efficient and effective residence life services to college students.

  • Contacts are typically co-workers, other college employees, vendors, students, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters.                                                                     

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, or outdoors, occasionally in cold inclement weather. 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: The position has direct supervision over residence life staff: Community Assistants (1), Undergraduate Resident Assistants (3-6). 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a bachelor’s degree in course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to required one to three years of related experience. 

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION: 

  • Position in non-exempt (bi-weekly paid).
  • Salary grade 12.
  • 10-month staff.
