The Assistant Softball Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Softball Coach in creating and maintaining a successful program for the institution on the field, in the classroom and in the community.


Teaching of skills required for both team and individual player development in coordination with the Head Coach

• Assists in identifying and recruiting academically and athletically talented student-athletes

• Assists in/with scheduling of officials; acquiring game balls; preparation of field; on field coaching; field clean up and lockdown

• Assists with maintenance of Softball field and other athletic facilities

• Assists in monitoring academic, social and personal development of Softball student-athletes

• Assist in promoting Middle Georgia State University and the Softball program to the Community and all forms of Media

• Develops and maintains effective relationships and communications with students, colleagues, staff, alumni and parents to insure the success and growth of the program

• Assists in maintaining and inventorying equipment

• Serve in the Wellness Center for hours specified by the Director

• Performs related duties as assigned by Head Coach or Athletics Administration 


• Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Southern States Conference (SSAC) rules and regulations.

• Knowledge of college-level athletic program management principles.

• Knowledge of sports field maintenance principles.

• Knowledge of Softball rules and procedures.

• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

• Skill in the coaching and training of student athletes.

• Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Athletics, Recreation & Wellness Director assigns work in terms of program goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports and observation of program activities.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include NAIA, NCAA and Southern States Athletic Conference rules and regulations and University policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.


• The work consists of varied program management and coaching duties. The variety of tasks to be overseen contributes to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to help direct and coach the University’s Softball program. Success in this position results in the successful provision of programming to Middle Georgia State University students.


• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other University personnel, students, and coaches form other institutions, Referees, student athletes, business professionals, professional scouts, and members of the general public.

• Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to motivate or influence persons.


• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.

• The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no direct supervision over other positions.


• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Bachelor degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.

• Experience as a player or coach at the collegiate or professional level may substitute for education requirements
