JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for training senior students and administering stage exams. 

MAJOR DUTIES: 

  • Administers stage checks according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations; accompanies students on flights and evaluates their skills.
  • Certifies and maintains FAA student records.
  • Conducts flight training.
  • Conducts ground training.
  • Flies ferry, maintenance and discovery flights as needed to ensure the proper maintenance of aircraft.
  • Flies aircraft to recruiting events; assists in the recruitment of students.
  • Hosts facilities tours.
  • Performs related duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: 

  • Knowledge of the principles of aircraft flight operations.
  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and requirements.
  • Knowledge of classroom and field training practices, teaching methodologies, assessment systems, and educational technology.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill to make timely decisions.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Department Chair, Flight Training Dept. (Chief Flight Instructor) assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include FAA regulations; practical test standards; aircraft information manuals; college policies and procedures; University System of Georgia policies and procedures; faculty, staff and student handbooks; and relevant state and federal regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK: 

  • The work consists of varied instructional duties. The need of providing instruction during flight situations contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to train senior students and administer stage exams. Success in this position contributes to the successful education of students. 

CONTACTS:                                                                     

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, FAA inspectors, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, in an aircraft and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over Senior Flight Instructor (1) and other Certified Flight Instructors. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain the following FAA approved certifications: Certified Flight Instructor, Instrument Instructor, and Multi-Engine Instructor.
  • A valid 2nd class medical certificate free of any operational restrictions and no pending FAA investigations. 

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION: 

  • This position is a non-exempt (bi-weekly paid).
  • Pay Grade 19.
