Description:

This position provides leadership over Middle Georgia State University’s library services across our five campuses. The Director facilitates a vision and strategic direction while leading Library Services in a unified plan of action. Library Services is part of Academic Affairs and the Director is responsible for program development and delivery and assessment of effectiveness. The Director will collaborate with faculty, staff and administrators to align and integrate the library with academic and student life of all campuses.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Develops, communicates and implements a vision of library priorities, services and strategic direction compatible with the mission of Middle Georgia State University.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of the Library’s strategic plan.
  • Prepares the library budget and manages all expenditures.
  • Guides the continuing evolution of academic information services and adoption of new technologies.
  • Maintains a program of continuous improvement and evaluation of Library Services performance.
  • Directs the recruitment and development of a diverse and talented staff and recommends to the Provost appointments, reappointments and separations.
  • Plans for and develops policies, procedures, services and resources to support the curricular needs of the university schools and departments.
  • Coordinates and participates in development and management of library collections and facilities.
  • Develops and facilities university-wide information literacy and related initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of emerging trends in academic library services, library operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of digital information resources.
  • Knowledge of collection development principles.
  • Knowledge of assessment and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of computer and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Skill in decision-making and problem solving.
  • Skill in the completion of a variety of reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited university. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted five years of related experience including two years in a supervisory role. Strong understanding of the issues of scholarly communication, open access and other challenges facing the 21st century academic library. Experience with assessment, strategic planning and budgeting. Experience with library consortia. Experience with literacy initiatives. Demonstrate an understanding of traditional and innovative methods of information dissemination such as Open Access and institutional repositories.

SALARY: Pay Grade 25
