Bibb Teacher of Year Finalists Include 3 Middle Georgia State Grads

The Bibb County School District recognized the 2013-2014 Teachers of the Year at its Board of Education meeting on Thursday, October 17, and announced seven finalists for the 2014 Bibb County Teacher of the Year. This year’s finalists, in alphabetical order by school, are:

Jessica Brown – Carter Elementary School. Brown is now in her fifth year of teaching at Carter Elementary School. She has an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Special Education from Macon State College, which she received in 2009. In 2013, she earned her Master’s in Special Education from Georgia College and State University.

• Dana Goshorn – Howard Middle School. Goshorn has taught in Bibb County for six years. She previously taught in Staunton, Va. Mrs. Goshorn is ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages, certified and has a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education, which she received from Berry College in 2007.

Brittany Austin – Riley Elementary School. Austin has taught at Riley Elementary School since 2010. She is certified in ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages, endorsement. Austin received a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Special Education from Macon State College in 2010. She earned a Master's degree in Early Education from Wesleyan College in 2011 and a Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Georgia College and State University in 2013.

• Hema Keerthi – Rutland High School. Keerthi, who is certified in both Gifted and Advanced Placement (AP), has taught at Rutland High School for eight years. There, she teaches AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and Accelerated Math III and IV. She is a 1992 graduate of Bangalore University and has a Master's of Mathematics Education from Georgia College and State University, which she received in 2012.

• Rosalyn Wiley-Tobler – Rutland Middle School. Wiley-Tobler has taught eighth grade Physical Science at Rutland Middle School since 2005. She has an undergraduate degree in Physics from Talladega College, which she received in 1991, and a Master's of Business Administration, which she received from Wesleyan College in 2005.

• Catrice Allen – Taylor Elementary School. Allen has taught in Bibb County for seven years. She taught high school science at Southwest High School before moving to Taylor Elementary School where she now teaches fifth grade. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 2006 and a Master's in Early Childhood Education in 2011 from Wesleyan College.

Robert Shepherd Jr. – Williams Elementary School. Shepherd has taught in Bibb County since 2007. He is certified in special education. Shepherd earned an Associate of Science in Business Administration and an Associate of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications in 2003 from Macon State College. In 2006, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Information Technology – Track in Cross Culture Issues from Macon State College. He also received a Masters of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Wesleyan College in 2010. Shepherd is currently working on his Doctorate of Education in Technology Integration into the Classroom from Argosy University.

The 2014 Bibb County Teacher of the Year will be named at the Bibb County Teacher of the Year Banquet at Mercer University's University Center on Thursday, November 7, at 6:30 p.m.
