The Duke Report – 11/11/13

The first full week of November had a lot of action for the Middle Georgia State Knights. Soccer finished up the season while men’s and women’s basketball got started and football picked up a couple more big wins.

Women’s Soccer: The Knights closed out their season with a 5-1 loss to Darton State College in the semifinals of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) playoffs. Three individuals received honors for the program from the season. Micayla Crenshaw was named first team All-Region having scored 27 goals which was 7th in the country for the regular season. Marissa Parker and Abbie Darnell were both named to GCAA All-Tournament team for their play in the GCAA conference tournament.

Men’s Soccer: The Knights ended their season in a tough loss to the number four team in the country, Eastern Florida State College, dropping the first round playoff game 4-3. The program had four individuals receive honors. Levi Lewis and Andrew Preston were named to the first team All-Region while Carlos Sandoval made second team All-Region and Casey Zwitch was named to the All-Tournament team for the GCAA tournament. Lewis and Preston led the team with eight goals each while Lewis had seven assists on the season as well. Sandoval was voted as one of the top defenders in the conference and Zwitch for his play in the tournament.

Women’s Basketball: The women’s team has gotten off to a slow start as well going 1-2 to this point. The team opened on November 4 with a heartbreaking loss to Georgia Highlands (GHC) 77-79 as a shot was missed at the buzzer. The team rebounded on November 6 winning against Clinton Junior College 74-66 at home before traveling to Clinton on November 9 and losing 55-65. The Knights have had great contributions from freshman Va’Queshia Hall out of Howard High School (Macon) who has averaged 12.7 PPG and had 14 blocks in three games including nine against Clinton on November 9. Hall had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Clinton on November 6 and scored 18 against Clinton on November 9. Sophomore Deundria Clark (Dutchtown HS) has averaged 11.3 PPG with 10 against GHC and Clinton on November 9 14 against Clinton on November 6. (So) Diamond Hudson (Warner Robins HS), (Fr) Ritzy Griffin (Westside Augusta), (Fr) Jada Haynes (Grove HS) and (So) Mikia Robinson (Veterans HS) have each had one game scoring 10 or more points.

Men’s Basketball: The men’s team opened the season on the road going 1-1 in games in Gainesville, FL against Santa Fe College (L, 63-73) and Impact Academy (W, 83-75). The Knights returned home for a conference game on November 4, dropping the game 67-75 to Georgia Highlands. The Knights also lost to Chattahoochee Valley CC 64-72 on November 7 to open the season 1-3. The Knights have been led in scoring by Freshman Jalen Lewis (Lithonia, GA) with 12.8 points per game (PPG), and 7.7 rebounds per game (RPG) including a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds against Impact Academy and 15 points against CVCC. Another freshman, Jamaal Anderson (Ludowici, GA), has averaged 9.2 PPG scoring double 19 against Impact and 11 against Georgia Highlands. Freshman Brandon Ingleton (Woodstock, GA) has also averaged 9.2 PPG having double-doubles of 15 points and 11 rebounds against Impact and Georgia Highlands while scoring 10 against CVCC.

Football: The program entered November with high hopes sitting at 7-0 and number one in the National Club Football Association (NCFA) and with four games to go, look to reach the NCFA National Championship game on December 7 in Salem, VA. The Knights faced Kennesaw State’s club team on November 2 winning the game 52-0 at West Laurens High Stadium. The team was led by QB Kion Button (McIntosh County Academy) who went 15-20 passing for 228 yards and 4 touchdowns, 2 to Quez Mahoganey (Wilcox County) while rushing for another 36 and scoring a touchdown on the ground. Rico Lyons (Mary Persons High) added eight carries for 119 yards and two TDs. The defense was led by Quintavious Martin (Manchester HS) with nine tackles and two sacks and Marcus Brown (Dodge County HS) who had two interceptions for 86 return yards. The Knights then travelled to Kennesaw to play the same team on the 9th and took the game 56-12 to move to 9-0 on the season and put a tighter grip on the number one ranking. The Knights were led by Button again with who went 19-24 for 231 yards and five TDs, two more to Mahoganey, and added 44 yards rushing. Lyons had five more carries for 101 yards and a TD while catching two passes for 52 yards and a TD. The Knights were led on defense by Ken Hughes’s (Bleckley County High) four interceptions including a 67 yard return for TD while Dominique Jordan (Camden County HS), Monty Wright (Radford HS, Honolulu, HI), and Miguel Carmona III (Howard HS, Macon) each had three sacks and Martin added two more sacks.
