• Master of Arts in English from the University of Southern Mississippi (2000)
• Doctor of Philosophy in English from the University of Southern Mississippi (2004)
Year he joined the Middle Georgia State (MGC) faculty: 2007.
Some of his teaching career highlights are … “Teaching upper-level English classes, such as Introduction to Literary Studies (ENGL 3010), a course in critical theory that begins preparing English majors to enter the current conversations taking place in literature scholarship.”
He enjoys teaching at Middle Georgia State because … “Many of our students are first-generation college-goers. That description applies to me too, so I understand the depth of the personal and professional power that flows from learning and recognize the fundamental role that education plays in developing otherwise hidden potential.”
His favorite course to teach is … “Introduction to Literary Studies (ENGL 3010). As suggested above, this course allows me the opportunity to shape an English major’s thinking right at the start of his or her college life. Often, students are totally unaware of the enormous changes in approaches to scholarship that have revolutionized English departments in the last forty years. Many are surprised at large and usually unexpected diversity of strategies that contemporary literary critics now adopt.”
One thing people don’t know about Middle Georgia State is … “The faculty are highly capable and accomplished individuals. The achievements of the professors teaching our students make a powerful advertisement for the school.”
One thing people don’t know about him is … “I like to listen to loud music -- Morrissey, The Smiths, Bowie, The Cure, The Lightning Seeds, The Beautiful South, Blondie, The Jam and Oasis all fit the bill.”
In his spare time he likes to … “Spend time with family and friends, enjoy good wine and watch or listen to whodunits. Among others, Wallander, Sherlock, and Inspector Morse are favorites.”
The one person he’d most like to meet is … “The Mississippi writer Eudora Welty. My book, Eudora Welty and Surrealism, makes a number of speculations about the life that she led. I'd like to ask her in person whether my suppositions had a basis in fact. On the other hand, perhaps ignorance would be preferable should her answers led to the undermining of some of my more cherished ideas. Still, I'd have plenty of questions to ask.”
If he wasn’t a college professor he would be … “A lighthouse keeper because the job has a meaningful purpose and the solitude appeals. I think all lighthouses are automated now, so I'd really have to take this up in another lifetime!”
