The Real Vera Stark Comes to Middle Georgia State

The Academy Awards have wrapped up, but the criticism by some over the lack of diversity in the nominations is still being buzzed about.

A new report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television finds that last year only 12% of the top 100 grossing films in Hollywood had female lead characters. That’s down 3 points from 2013.

Furthermore the study found that only 11% of all female characters last year were African American, only 4% Latina or Asian.

The challenge of being an actress of color goes way back.

Sydney H. Chalfa is Associate Professor of Theatre at Middle Georgia State College. She’s director of a play about the color barriers that existed for black actors in 1940’s Hollywood. The play starts April 2, 2015 and will run for two weeks on the Macon campus.
