Middle Georgia State Launches IT Summer Camp for High School Students

Created for rising 9th- through 12th-graders, IT Summer Camp will also delve into mobile app development and computer networking.
Middle Georgia State came up with the camp as part of its responsibilities as lead institution for the state in the National Science Foundation grant-funded Southeastern Advanced Cybersecurity Education Consortium (ACE). Besides introducing high school students to the latest in IT developments, the School of Information Technology hopes the camp will reel in prospects for future enrollment at Middle Georgia State.
“It’s a way for us to share some of the fun, creative things we are doing here,” said Dr. Kevin Floyd, program director and associate professor of IT. “If we bring these high school students here, they’ll see some of the fascinating things going on in the field and might consider enrolling at Middle Georgia State after they graduate.”
Enrollment for this first camp is limited to 30 students, who must fill out applications. Students accepted into the camp do not have to be experts in any of the topics to be covered but must have some IT experience “just to make sure they’re comfortable with the basics,” Floyd said.
“We have faculty members volunteering their time, as well as volunteers from the IT industry, teaching at the camp,” he said. “I think it will be an exceptional experience for students. In later years we’d like to expand so we can accommodate more students and spread it out over three or four days.”
Middle Georgia State’s IT Summer Camp takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 10. All activities will take place in the Professional Sciences and Conference Center on the Macon Campus.
Cost per student is $25 to cover breakfast and lunch both days.
