COCHRAN, GA - Middle Georgia State University is adding women’s volleyball and women’s cross country to its Knights athletic program as of fall 2016. Both teams – to be based on the Macon Campus - will compete in the NAIA and Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC.)

The addition of the two programs, recently approved by the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents, brings the total number of Middle Georgia State’s varsity athletic teams to 10. Other teams are men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and baseball. Most teams are based on the Cochran Campus, but the men’s and women’s soccer teams began playing their home games in Macon this season. The addition of women’s volleyball and cross country is another step in expanding the athletic program to the Macon Campus.

“The addition of women’s volleyball and women’s cross country, both housed on the Macon Campus, is another example of our university’s commitment to women’s sports and to the student body of the Macon Campus," said Charles Mullis, MGA director of Athletics & Recreation. "These additions will provide greater opportunities for women to participate in intercollegiate athletics and give students on the Macon Campus a chance to attend home matches."

The women’s volleyball program is expected to add 20 student-athletes to MGA’s enrollment while the women’s cross country will add at least 10 student-athletes, bringing the total count of student-athletes to about 180 for the 2016-2017 year.

The teams will join the other women’s volleyball and cross country teams competing in the SSAC. The volleyball team will play home matches and practice in the Macon Campus Recreation & Wellness Center. Cross country members will train on the Macon Campus. Players for both teams will live at University Pointe, the Macon Campus’s student residential community.

Students and prospective students interested in playing on either team can get more information at www.mgaknights.com. MGA will hire head coaches and assistant coaches for the new teams in the near future.
