MGA Art Professor’s Collaborative Works Featured At Columbus State Exhibition

A major exhibition presented by Columbus State University features the collaborative art of one of Middle Georgia State University’s newest faculty members.

“Agglomeration” is an exhibit featuring paintings and drawings created collaboratively by Luke Buffenmyer, assistant professor of art at MGA, and artist Megan McNaught. The exhibition at the Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery at Columbus State runs through February 26.

Agglomeration is a mass or collection of things. “The work in the exhibition is collaborative paintings and drawings, made with acrylic and oil paint, charcoal and a bit of mixed media,” Buffenmyer said. “Usually one person starts the works and the other one finishes it.”

Buffenmyer joined the MGA faculty in fall 2020. A native of Chicago, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and his master’s degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University.

Prior to coming to MGA, he taught at Florida A&M University and Mercer University. Recent exhibits of his work have taken place at Macon’s Museum of Arts and Sciences, Hera Gallery, Hadley Gallery, and Chapel Art Center Gallery.

“My background is in painting, drawing and photography, and I also do graphic design,” he said.

Buffenmyer is helping build up MGA’s new B.A. degree in Applied Art & Design, a professionally focused degree created in response to Georgia’s burgeoning art, entertainment, and recreation industry. Housed in the School of Arts & Letters, the degree is the only one of its kind in the state of Georgia.

The Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment.*
