Middle Georgia State Hosting Veterans Day Events

Middle Georgia State College is observing Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with events on all five campuses. All events are free and open to the public.

Downtown Macon

President Christopher Blake will participate in a service with Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert at the World War I Memorial on Coleman Hill in downtown Macon. Prior to the ceremony, students will clean up the area and will plant flowers at the memorial.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. The program includes:

Remarks about The Machine Gun Corps of Macon -- Dr. Christopher Blake

Poetry Reading -- “In Flander’s Field,” read by Dee Lindsey,a college employee and military veteran

Macon Campus

At 1 p.m. Tuesday in room 261 of the Student Life Center on the Macon Campus, Terry Hamilton, a veteran and Middle Georgia State's director of testing, will lead a discussion about the history of Veterans Day.

Each active duty and veteran student will receive a special token of appreciation. A reception will follow.

At 3 p.m. in room 209 of the Recreation and Wellness Center, a Hero WOD (Workout of the Day) will take place. Hero WODs were created to honor veterans in the fitness world. Many gyms throughout the nation choose one of the workouts created to honor the soldiers and gather as many people as they can to complete it together on Veterans Day.

Dublin Campus

The Dublin Campus will feature a Veterans Seminar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center. The event is hosted by Middle Georgia State's political science department. Events include:

8 a.m. Continental Breakfast

8:20 a.m. Ice breaker, Kevin Reid, MGA Auxiliary Services

8:25 a.m. -- Getting to know our vets, Bibb County Sheriff’s Dept. representative

8:45 a.m. Posting of colors

8:50 a.m. -- Remembrance ceremony, Keith Smith, American Legion Post 17, and Adrian Noble, MGA student

8:55 a.m. -- Opening remarks, Pella Murphy, Director of the Warner Robins Campus

9:00 a.m. Welcome, Keith Smith, American Legion Post 17

9:05 a.m. Introduction of speaker, Grace Adams-Square,Middle Georgia State College

9:10 a.m. Speaker, Dr. Frank Jordan, VA Medical Center,Supervisory Public Affairs Officer

9:35 a.m. MGA yellow ribbon; enrollment under Veteran Education Benefits and VA waivers, Joanna Whatley, Registrar, Dublin Campus

10:00 a.m. Women in transition presentation, Students currently enrolled at MGA

10:15 a.m. Break, followed by a discussion about post-traumatic stress disorder.

11:45 a.m. Lunch

1:00 p.m. Adjourn. Ceremony to follow at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin.

The Eastman Campuswill host a gathering at 1 p.m. that will include the presentation of the colors, remarks and a reception. For more information, contact Christy Faulk at christy.faulk@mga.edu.
