The Georgia Forestry Commission will be conducting a controlled burn on the grounds of Middle Georgia State College Cochran Campus sometime in the next several weeks. The burn is being conducted to control the undergrowth and allow the pine trees to continue to grow and thrive.

We do NOT know – and cannot know in advance – precisely when the burning will occur. We are hopeful that the burn can be achieved in December or January. The Forestry Commission will not burn if the wind is too high, if the wind direction would push excessive amounts of smoke into a residential area or across our campus, or if there are other conditions such that ground crews would have any difficulty controlling the fire.

Due to the possibility of exposure to smoke, people with respiratory or heart-related illnesses are being asked to exercise caution. Persons with asthma, emphysema, bronchitis or chronic heart disease are urged to monitor breathing and exposure to airborne matter. If problems develop call your health care provider. If you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness or pain, or unusual fatigue, contact medical personnel immediately.

Individuals with heart and lung ailments should have his/her medication readily available. People with asthma should follow their doctor-approved breathing management guidelines.

People should limit or eliminate outdoor exposure, especially if you smell smoke or experience symptoms such as a cough or throat irritation.

Students with medical concerns or needing special assistance should contact Allen Chastain, Director of the Office of Disability Services at allen.chastain@mga.edu or call 478-471-2985.
