Middle Georgia State University is opening up recreation and wellness centers on the Cochran and Macon campuses to community memberships.

"This is a way of reaching out to our communities," said James Hagler, associate director of athletics and recreation. "We have great recreational facilities that probably many people who live in Cochran and Macon aren't even aware of."

As of July 1, residents of the communities became eligible to buy individual memberships at either facility for $35 a month. The Cochran Campus Wellness Center also will offer a family membership for $80 a month. For the time being, the university will not offer family memberships at the Macon Campus Recreation & Wellness Center due to staffing levels.

Members must be at least 18 at the Macon Campus center unless they are Middle Georgia State students. At the Cochran Campus center, family memberships only include children ages 10 and older.

The Cochran Campus Wellness Center is behind Knights Hall, near the softball and baseball fields. The center features fitness area, indoor rock wall, basketball court, walking track and aerobics room. Use of the campus's outdoor swimming pool is included in community memberships.

The Macon Campus Recreation & Wellness Center is located near the intersection of Columbus Road and Ivey Drive. The center includes an indoor aquatics area with a current pool; fitness area; basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts; interactive gaming area; bowling alley, indoor walking track and food area.

To become a member, individuals must do the following:

1. Complete an application form.
2. Go to the Bursar's Office to pay (located in the Student Life Center on the Macon Campus and in Grace Hall on the Cochran Campus).
3. Go to the campus Police Department to get an ID and sign various release forms.

Membership applications and additional details - including pricing for three-month, semi-annual and annual memberships - are available at www.mga.edu/wellness/.
