Music Program
Create. Perform. Produce.
The Department of Media, Culture, & the Arts is home to the Music Program at Middle Georgia State University.
Our Music Program provides a wide array of opportunities for music majors and non-music majors through courses, applied lessons and ensembles. Our degree, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, is one of the most progressive music degrees in Georgia. Our Associate of Arts degree in Music is open access and provides a gateway to more concentrated study.
We are preparing our music majors for the 21st century cultural economy. They are imagining and creating product through courses in music technology, studio production, song writing, scoring and arranging. They are learning to capitalize on the artistic product through courses in marketing, entrepreneurship and nonprofit management.
Our Music Program is committed to diversity of artistic expression and affirms the music of Bach and the blues masters.
Welcome
Welcome
The Music program at MGA welcomes students from all musical backgrounds. We are committed to providing you with an omnicultural musical education and the skills to move between cultural marketplaces.
What does that mean?
The modern music student wants to learn musical forms beyond Bach and Beethoven, and the music faculty at MGA is committed to that. Music study should reflect our diverse culture, and it should protect and develop the classical canon. We do not consider these two goals to be in conflict.
We also know that students want to take ownership of their careers. Through courses in song writing, scoring and arranging, and music technology, you will develop your unique musical style and create a marketable product. Through your applied study and ensembles, you will learn to present and interpret the world’s best music, including your own compositions. You will also have ample room in your course of study to select electives that advance your own career goals.
We want all musicians to consider auditioning for the Bachelor of Arts in Music, including those who have wonderful musical experiences but not necessarily years of intensive musical training during their high school years and beyond. We also welcome highly skilled and trained musicians who want to be part of a vibrant, culturally diverse program.
If you want to couple an associate’s degree in Music with another baccalaureate degree, we provide that as well and can help you as you make smart academic choices.
We welcome you into our vibrant arts community. At MGA, we believe in your individual greatness. Come discover who you are as an artist.
