How To Apply
Auditions
Students will utilize one application process to apply for both Middle Georgia State University and music study. A separate music application is not required, but students seeking the Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Musicianship (BACM) must register for an audition using the link provided.
Students seeking the Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Musicianship (BACM) must register for an audition via email to . See “Audition Requirements,” below, before registering for an audition.
Students must audition in person. Recorded auditions will not be accepted.
Students must be accepted into MGA and then complete a BACM audition to be accepted into the BACM program. All students are encouraged to audition for the BACM. Students who require additional study before they are prepared for a BACM audition (see “Audition Requirements,” below) are welcome to apply to the Associates of Arts in Music (AA) program, which is open-access and does not require an audition. Upon completion of the AA program, the student may transition into the BACM program.
New Freshman
The following requirements are for new freshman.
Brass
A demonstration of lyric and technical skills, using either one or two selections. The selection(s) may include solos, concerto movements, or etudes. Other options include chromatic scale showing range, two (2) major scales, and sight-reading. No accompaniment, live or recorded, will be permitted.
If these requirements exceed an applicant’s training, the applicant is still encouraged to apply and audition. Please prepare a ten (10) minute audition which demonstrates your best musical ability.
Guitar
A demonstration of lyric and technical skills, using either one or two selections. The selection(s) may include solos which show your skill or etudes (e.g. Carcassi). Options include chromatic scale and two (2) major scales of your choice. No accompaniment, live or recorded, will be permitted.
If these requirements exceed an applicant’s training, the applicant is still encouraged to apply and audition. Please prepare a ten (10) minute audition which demonstrates your best musical ability.
Percussion
Audition will include three (3) parts: one (1) Snare; two (2) mallets; and three (3) either timpani or drumsets.
- Snare drum: one solo of your choice.
- Mallet: one solo of your choice.
- Timpani: one 2- timpani solo of your choice;
- Drumset: demonstrate different styles (jazz, Latin, rock, etc.) of student’s choice or sight reading. No accompaniment, live or recorded, will be permitted.

Piano
A demonstration of lyric and technical skills, using either one (1) or two (2) selections. The selection(s) may include solos of your choice, concerto movements, or etudes. Other options include chromatic scale, Two (2) major scales, and sight-reading.
If these requirements exceed an applicant’s training, the applicant is still encouraged to apply and audition. Please prepare a ten (10) minute audition which demonstrates your best musical ability.
Bass
Two (2) pieces in contrasting styles demonstrating proficiency in bass lines and melodies. Selections may include etudes, standard tunes in any style, blues or rhythm changes, orchestral excerpts, concerto movements or other solo literature, solo transcriptions, improvised solos and original compositions. Two (2) major scales of student’s choice. Other options include sight-reading of standard notation and chord symbols.
Students may audition on electric bass or double bass, but are required to play both instruments for the major. A bass amp will be provided for the audition. No accompaniment, live or recorded, will be permitted.

Voice
Two (2) pieces in contrasting styles. Selections can include art songs, folk songs, jazz standards, or music theatre that include sight-reading. An accompanist will be provided or you may bring your own.
If these requirements exceed an applicant’s training, the applicant is still encouraged to apply and audition. Please prepare a 10 minute audition which demonstrates your best musical ability.
Woodwinds
A demonstration of lyric and technical skills, using either one (1) or two (2) selections. The selection(s) may include solos, concerto movements, or etudes. Options include chromatic scale, two (2) major scale that include sight-reading. No accompaniment, live or recorded, will be permitted.
If these requirements exceed an applicant’s training, the applicant is still encouraged to apply and audition. Please prepare a ten (10) minute audition which demonstrates your best musical ability.
Theory Requirement
All new students will take a theory placement test. Students who do not make a 70 or above may be required to enroll in an online music theory remedial course. Students will be required to repeat the online tutorial until an exit score of 80 or above is achieved.
Transfer Students
Audition repertoire for transfer students will follow the same guidelines as new student auditions with the exception of scales: all major and natural minor scales will be required of transfer students applying for the sophomore level.

Visit
We encourage you to visit Middle Georgia State University. Tour the campus and spend part of the day with our Music Program faculty and students. Sit in on a few classes, attend an ensemble performance and/or have a one-on-one session with one of our music instructors.

Apply
To apply for the Music Program, follow and complete the MGA application process. When the application is complete, register for an audition using the link below.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Students auditioning for the Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Musicianship degree program will be automatically considered for a music scholarship. In order to qualify for federal financial aid and an MGA scholarship, students must follow instructions on the Financial Aid page.
Students applying for the Associate of Arts in Music degree program without completing an audition are invited to apply for a scholarship through the MGA Foundation.
Auditions are required to be considered for a music scholarship.
Music scholarships will be based upon the quality of the audition and the needs of the department. A letter of recommendation from a music teacher is required when registering for the audition.
