Dr. Sonya Mosely

Biography:	With over 28 years of robust experience in education, including six enriching years in higher education, I am deeply passionate about fostering a love for learning. My journey has encompassed a wide array of roles, from elementary teaching and reading intervention to school counseling and instructional leadership. Currently, I have the privilege of serving as an Assistant Professor of Literacy and Elementary Education at Middle Georgia State University, where I enthusiastically teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education. My expertise is centered around vital areas such as early literacy, the Science of Reading, Structured Literacy, dyslexia, literacy assessment and intervention, curriculum design, teacher preparation, and engaging families in the learning process. I've had the honor of leading initiatives that promote literacy education, enhance educator preparation, and strengthen partnerships between schools, families, and communities. Additionally, I proudly contribute to the Educator Preparation Program Approval Review Team for the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. I’ve also been recognized for my commitment to excellence as a 2023–2024 Governor’s Teaching Fellow (Academic Year) at the University of Georgia, and as Albany State University's Emerging Faculty of the Year for both the University and the School of Education in 2024–2025. Notably, I successfully spearheaded efforts at my previous institution that led to our Reading Foundations courses receiving an “A” rating from the National Council on Teacher Quality in 2025. I’m excited about the future and the impact we can create together in literacy education!
Teaching and Research Interests:	Teaching and Research Interests My teaching and research interests focus on early literacy development, evidence-based literacy instruction, literacy assessment and intervention, dyslexia, and the preparation of effective literacy educators. I am particularly interested in how the brain develops in utero and across early childhood, how the developing brain becomes organized for language and eventually learns to read, and how early experiences influence later literacy development. A central area of my research interest is parent and family engagement, particularly the impact of parental support for language and literacy development before children enter formal schooling. I am interested in examining how early home literacy experiences, family involvement, and school-family partnerships influence children’s literacy development, long-term academic achievement, and eventual college and career readiness. Additional interests include culturally responsive literacy practices, literacy leadership, teacher preparation, and targeted assessment and intervention for developing readers.

Professional Experience:	I bring more than 28 years of experience in education, including six years of teaching and service in higher education. I currently serve as an Assistant Professor of Literacy and Elementary Education at Middle Georgia State University, where I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education. My higher education experience also includes teacher preparation, student advising and mentoring, curriculum and course development, field and practicum supervision, literacy program coordination, and university service. Prior to entering higher education, I served in a variety of K–12 roles, including elementary teacher, reading intervention specialist, professional school counselor, assistant principal of curriculum, and elementary school principal. These experiences have provided me with a broad perspective on literacy development, instructional leadership, student support, curriculum and assessment, educator development, and school-family-community partnerships. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to improving literacy outcomes for children, preparing effective educators, and strengthening the connections among research, classroom practice, families, and communities.
