Biography: It's a long story. I'm working on it.
Teaching and Research Interests: I'm interested in the role of writing, literature, and the humanities in cultivating eudaimonia, human flourishing, the art of living well. How might the practices of creative and critical reading, writing, and thinking help us develop ethical awareness and behavior, focused imagination, self-awareness, and civic engagement? By engaging in study and practice of literary art, what information can we gather and assemble into knowledge of human experience? How do imaginatively-constructed and linguistically-mediated renderings of human experience shape our evolving understanding of life, humanity, and our world? How does such knowledge empower the wisdom necessary to engage in meaningful, purposeful action toward worthy goals? How do these processes and practices lead to deep, positive changes in the ways we think, act, and feel? How might literary experiences provide a clearer vision of life as it is, a bolder dream of life as it could be, and a stronger determination to make it so?
