MGA Volunteers to Honor 9/11 Through First Responder Appreciation, Community Service

Middle Georgia State University (MGA) students, staff, and faculty will honor the 25th anniversary of September 11 by serving first responders and supporting people experiencing homelessness through a series of volunteer activities across the institution’s five campuses.

As part of “Knights Serve for 9/11 Day,” MGA volunteers will provide waterless car washes for first responders, along with refreshments and thank-you cards. The first-responder appreciation events will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, September 24, in front of Gateway Hall on the Cochran Campus, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, September 25, by the Volleyball Gym on the Macon Campus.

MGA volunteers also will assemble care kits for people served by Daybreak, a Macon ministry that works with people experiencing homelessness. Care-kit assembly sessions will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, September 21, in Oak Hall on the Warner Robins Campus; at 9 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, in the Flight Lobby on the Eastman Campus; and at 8 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, in the library on the Dublin Campus.

Knights Serve for 9/11 Day is supported by a national grant from the 9/11 Day nonprofit organization and AmeriCorps. The grant program supports K-12 schools, colleges and universities in organizing volunteer projects for the National Day of Service and Remembrance, an annual observance established to transform the memory of September 11 into a day of unity and service.

MGA is incorporating the initiative into its annual Day of Service, which gives students across all five campuses the opportunity to participate in coordinated volunteer efforts.

“Receiving this grant allows us to expand opportunities for our students to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve while honoring the spirit of service that emerged in the aftermath of September 11,” said Devereaux Lindsey, MGA’s assistant director for Student Engagement & Service. “By combining Knights Serve for 9/11 Day with our annual Day of Service, we hope to inspire even more students to give back and strengthen our connections with communities across the region.”

The National Day of Service and Remembrance encourages volunteerism as a lasting tribute to those affected by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Millions of Americans participate in service projects each year in observance of 9/11 Day.
