Middle Georgia State University (MGA) students will soon have a new way to get around campus, thanks to a new bike-share program.

Bike Walk Macon has partnered with MGA’s Recreation and Wellness program to provide five bicycles and safety helmets that students can check out and use on the Macon Campus. The bicycles will be housed at the MGA Recreation & Wellness Center.

Students will be able to check out a bicycle by presenting their student ID at the Rec & Wellness Center front desk. Their ID will be returned when the bicycle and equipment are brought back. The bicycles also will be equipped with tracking devices to help MGA locate them if needed.

“Bike Walk Macon reached out to some of our colleagues in Student Affairs, and the idea blossomed from there,” said Carl Woods, MGA director of Recreation and Wellness. “We are excited to offer students another way to stay active while getting around campus. It’s part of our effort to support the whole student, both inside and outside the classroom.”

The bike-share program will be highlighted during MGA’s Ride, Walk, & Wellness Celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, October 9, on the Macon Campus.

The event, hosted by Recreation & Wellness and MGA’s Center for Middle Georgia Studies in partnership with Bike Walk Macon and other community organizations, will focus on movement, health, safety, and transportation resources available throughout Macon-Bibb County.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn about local resources and programs related to walking, bicycling, public transportation and pedestrian safety. They also can test out one of MGA’s new bicycles by taking it for a spin around campus.

Indoor presentations will be held at the Center for Middle Georgia Studies, which is located on the first floor of the Macon Campus library. Outdoor activities will take place in the area between the Macon Campus library and Administration building.

The Friday, October 9, schedule includes:

10 a.m. - Bicycle safety lesson led by Rudy Mendes, education instructor with Bike Walk Macon

11 a.m. - Presentation by Macon-Bibb County Traffic Safety Manager Weston Strong

Noon - Bicycle safety lesson led by Mendes

In addition to Bike Walk Macon, event partners include Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority, Pedestrian Safety Review Board, Bike Tech, and Centenary Community Ministries Inc.

“This is an opportunity to discover ways to stay active and connect with resources in the community,” Woods said.
