Biography: I am Dr. Mary Mears, and I am originally from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Accomack County. My educational career spans more than forty (40) years starting in the Atlanta Public Schools and then moving on to Clark College now called CAU. After leaving Clark College, I came to this institution called Macon Junior College in 1984. I have taught and still teach a variety of courses. When I first began teaching here, I taught Learning Support English and Reading, Regents Remediation English and Reading and later, African American Literature. For the last ten or so years, I have taught English 1101, 1102, African American Literature 2141and 2142; American Literature 2132, World Literature 2111 and 2112, and Studies in African Fiction 4160.

During my tenure here, I developed the courses African American Literature 2141, 2142 and Studies in African Fiction. These are my areas of expertise. I did my dissertation on Flora Nwapa, a Nigerian writer, and I examined the roles of women in society and how they used the concepts of negotiation and voice to give empowerment to the women and the community at large.

Professional Experience: I have taught on mostly all levels starting with grades 9-12 at C. L. Harper High School in Atlanta. Then I taught at Clark College for four years before coming to Macon Junior College, now known as Middle Georgia State University. In addition , I have been employed as an adjunct at Mercer University, Central Georgia Technical College and Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville , Florida. Also, I worked as a Writing tutor for the Mercer School of Law. While pursuing my doctorate, I worked as teaching assistant at the University of South Florida. Currently, I teach e-Core classes through the University System of Georgia's online instruction program.

Model African Union club, Advisor
Awards and Honors: I co- hosted the 19th Annual Southeast Model African Union Conference November 5-7, 2015. This conference allows students to learn about the issues related to Africa and how those issues impact the rest of the world.
