Middle Georgia State University (MGA) recognized outstanding faculty members at the 2026 Honors Convocation for their achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service.

This year’s honorees reflect MGA’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, student success, and community impact.

The Excellence in Full-Time Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Lorraine Dubuisson of the Department of English. Known for her student-centered approach, Dubuisson emphasizes a “pedagogy of kindness” while maintaining high academic standards. She regularly shares her expertise in teaching and learning with colleagues and works collaboratively with students, faculty, and community partners to address real-world challenges through education.

The Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award was awarded to Michael Gillies of the Department of Media, Culture, and the Arts. Gillies incorporates a range of instructional strategies that promote discussion, critical thinking, and hands-on learning in both lecture and studio settings. His commitment to student success and community engagement has made a meaningful impact on both his students and the broader University community.

Dr. Scott Spangler of the Department of Information Technology received the Excellence in Scholarship Award for his significant contributions to research, grant writing, and academic collaboration. Since joining MGA, Spangler has published and presented more than 30 peer-reviewed works. His research on online learning and cognitive mindfulness has also informed instructional practices across the University.

The Excellence in Service Award was presented to Dr. Sharon Colley of the Department of English for her extensive contributions to MGA’s academic community. Colley has played a key role in curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and student support initiatives, including her work with the Writing Center. Her leadership and dedication have strengthened the university’s intellectual environment and enhanced opportunities for student success.

The Provost’s Award, which recognizes excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, was awarded to Dr. Shane Trayers of the Department of English. Trayers is known for fostering inclusive, engaging classroom environments that support student achievement. Her scholarly work includes publications and research focused on student well-being and learning, while her extensive service includes leadership roles on numerous committees and organizations. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on both students and the institution.

MGA’s nominee for the University System of Georgia’s (USG’s) Felton Jenkins Jr. Hall of Fame Faculty Award is Cory Smith, senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology and Criminal Justice. Smith is recognized for his innovative and highly effective teaching strategies, particularly in online learning environments. His use of evidence-based practices, real-world applications, and emphasis on critical thinking helps foster engaging and supportive learning experiences for students.

MGA’s nominee for the USG Board of Regents’ Momentum Award for Excellence in Advising and Student Success is the Department of Computer Science. The department is recognized for its proactive, data-informed approach to advising and mentoring. Faculty have created a supportive academic environment that helps students succeed both during their studies and in preparation for their careers.
