The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act

The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act) is a federal consumer protection law that promotes transparency around campus crime policy and statistics. It ensures that students, employees, and families have access to accurate information about campus safety so they can make informed decisions about where to study, work, and live.

Under the Clery Act, all colleges and universities that receive federal funding must publish an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (ASFSR) by October 1 each year. This report provides a comprehensive overview of campus safety through:

  • Crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years
  • Policy statements describing procedures for reporting crimes, campus facility access, and law enforcement authority
  • Prevention and response protocols related to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking
  • Information on alcohol, drug use, and fire safety policies and related prevention programs

Expanding Protections: The Stop Campus Hazing Act

In 2024, the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) expanded the Clery Act to include hazing as a reportable crime and required institutions to provide hazing prevention education and public disclosure of hazing incidents.

Middle Georgia State University complies with the federal Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act and the Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA), as well as Georgia’s Max Gruver Act. Together, these laws strengthen accountability, transparency, and prevention efforts across all university programs and student organizations.

Clery Requirements

The Clery Act requires institutions to:

  • Report campus crime data publicly and accurately
  • Support victims of violence through established response procedures and resources
  • Disclose campus safety policies that reflect a commitment to prevention, awareness, and transparency
The Clery Act reinforces the principle that campus safety information is a right, not a privilege, empowering students, employees, and families to stay informed and engaged in building safer
