In 2018, during a joint class reunion, the Middle Georgia College graduating classes of 1955, 1956, and 1957 were inspired by the late Dr. Bill Golden (Class of 1956) to create a lasting legacy. Dr. Golden encouraged his fellow alumni to come together and establish a scholarship fund to support students facing financial challenges in pursuing a college education.

Dr. Golden and his classmates understood firsthand the difficulties that students from rural areas often encounter when trying to afford college. Their own experiences motivated them to give back and help others achieve the same opportunities that had changed their lives.

Mary "Tot" Smith (Class of 1957) shared, "We formed this scholarship because we all prospered by attending that little college, and we wanted to give others the same opportunity."

Tot recalled that when Dr. Golden proposed the idea, not a single person from the three classes hesitated. The decision to create and fund the scholarship was unanimous—a testament to their shared values and commitment to helping others.

She fondly remembered Dr. Golden, a native of Sandersville, GA, as someone who was always thoughtful and caring. As president of the Class of 1956, he exemplified leadership and compassion.

The generosity of the MGC Classes of 1955, 1956, and 1957 has helped more than 15 students since 2019 to attend college. Their support continues to open doors for future generations, helping students realize their dreams and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Today, we proudly salute the Classes of 1955, 1956, and 1957 for their enduring spirit of generosity and their commitment to education.
