Carolyn Wynn Smalley’s Gift Powers Teaching, Research, and Discovery at MGA
Mrs. Carolyn Wynn Smalley’s legacy at Middle Georgia State University reflects vision, generosity, and a deep commitment to the natural world. Through her estate, she ensured that future students would benefit from meaningful educational opportunities. Her philanthropy supported the Center for Middle Georgia Studies, strengthened athletics, and advanced a wide range of academic initiatives.
One of her most enduring contributions is the Carolyn Wynn Smalley Distinguished Chair in Biology and Environmental Sciences, established in 2011. She envisioned the position as a catalyst for place-based learning, asking that it focus on Georgia’s native species, ecosystems, and the importance of preserving natural lands. Her foresight continues to guide how students engage with environmental education.
In May 2024, Dr. Dawn Sherry was named the Carolyn Wynn Smalley Endowed Chair, reflecting Mrs. Smalley’s commitment to academic excellence and stewardship. Dr. Sherry advances these priorities by expanding undergraduate research, increasing experiential learning, and strengthening the department’s visibility, opening doors to funding and partnerships.
Dr. Sherry’s work embodies Mrs. Smalley’s values through her research in avian ecology and her focus on native plants and ecosystems. She emphasizes hands-on learning, leading students into the field and helping them connect scientific theory with real-world environments.
Mrs. Smalley’s impact is also felt in the broader culture of the Department of Natural Sciences, where research experiences, internships, and initiatives like the proposed NextGen Lab Initiative continue to enhance student opportunities. Her legacy lives on through the students, faculty, and discoveries she made possible, inspiring environmental education and stewardship for generations to come.
