MGA School of Aviation (SOA) Student Achievement

Middle Georgia State University’s School of Aviation evaluates success with respect to student achievement consistent with its mission, the mission of the University, and the MGA Strategic Plan.

B.S. in Aviation Science and Management (flight track) Mission Statement

The B.S. in Aviation Science and Management (advanced flight track) educates students for careers as professional pilots by providing highly advanced training in a learning environment that prepares students for the demands of the aviation industry.

MGA SOA Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes

The program goals of the BSASM Advanced Flight Track are

PROGRAM GOAL 1: To graduate competent and technically skilled pilots whose aviation and liberal arts education has prepared them for success in the aviation industry and beyond.
PROGRAM GOAL 2: To provide access, promote progression, and facilitate degree completion.

MGA’s BSASM: Advanced Flight Student Learning outcomes align with Aviation Accreditation Board International General Outcomes and Aviation Core Outcomes.

The School of Aviation evaluates its success in regard to program goals and student achievement in the BSASM Advanced Flight Track using the following metrics and benchmarks:

KEY ASSESSMENTS

MGA’s School of Aviation tracks student achievement in Advanced Flight through measurement of key Student Learning Outcomes that are part of the program’s comprehensive assessment plan. In particular the following three Student Learning Outcomes are measured each semester through a key assessment:

1. Student will exhibit knowledge involving application of mathematics, science and applied science to aviation-related disciplines as required by the FAA.

2. Students will demonstrate instructional knowledge related to the use of techniques, skills, and modern technology necessary for professional practice as required by the FAA.

Fundamentals of Instruction FAA Written Exam

3. Students will exhibit instructional knowledge in identifying and solving problems

Certified Flight Instructor Airplane/Helicopter FAA Written Exam

The benchmark of success for each key assessment is for 70% of students to achieve at least 70%.


EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES

MGA’s School of Aviation tracks student achievement in Advanced Flight through measurement of employment outcomes.

The benchmark of success for employment is for 75% of graduates to attain professional employment in their first year after graduation.

GRADUATION RATES

MGA’s School of Aviation tracks student achievement in Advanced Flight tracks graduation rates of all first-time bachelor’s degree-seeking students.

The benchmark of success for is to meet or exceed the 6 Year average graduation rate of all first time, full time bachelor’s degree-seeking students at Middle Georgia State University.


COURSE SUCCESS

MGA School of Aviation tracks success rates for all courses in Advanced Flight.

The benchmark of success is a 75% course success rate for all courses.

AABI General Outcomes

The AABI general outcomes are derived from the Accreditation Criteria Manual section 2.3.1

  1. Apply mathematics, science, and applied sciences to aviation-related disciplines.
  2. Analyze and interpret data.
  3. Work effectively on multi-disciplinary and diverse teams.
  4. Make professional and ethical decisions.
  5. Communicate effectively, using both written and oral communication skills.
  6. Engage in and recognize the need for life-long learning.
  7. Assess contemporary issues.
  8. Use the techniques, skills, and modern technology necessary for professional practice.
  9. Assess the national and international aviation environment.
  10. Apply pertinent knowledge in identifying and solving problems.
  11. Apply knowledge of business sustainability to aviation issues.

AABI Aviation Core Outcomes

The AABI core outcomes are derived from the Accreditation Criteria Manual Section 2.4.1.

The AABI aviation core outcomes are the established aviation-related core topics to be assessed for all aviation graduates.

The curriculum must address student knowledge outcomes in the following aviation core topics:

  1. Attributes of an aviation professional, career planning and certification.
  2. Aircraft design, performance, operating characteristics and maintenance.
  3. Aviation safety and human factors.
  4. National and international aviation law, regulations, and labor issues.
  5. Airports, airspace, and air traffic control.
  6. Meteorology and environmental issues.

Aviation outcomes are measured using a variety of methods. These include examinations, tests, and quizzes, as well as projects and oral presentations. In the case of flight students, it includes check-rides and FAA knowledge exams.
